A letter from me, Chen
Hi there! Welcome!
Thank you for visiting my portfolio! I hope you enjoy exploring my many passions, both engineering and personal :)
I am currently a Mechanical Engineering 5th year M.S. student at UC Berkeley. I graduated in May 2024 from UC Berkeley M.E.T. Program with two B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration. I grew up in Guangzhou China and went to high school in Philadelphia.
My research interest interfuses soft robotics, medical devices, and advanced manufacturing. Berkeley, under Professor Fearing's guidance in the Biomimetics Millisystem Lab, I've been researching pneumatic thin film pouch robots using solvent-ink masking and printing techniques. I co-invented IMPRINT, a fabrication method for creating scalable, highly integrated soft robots and actuators. To expand our research's impact, I designed an IMPRINT soft continuum manipulator for improved surgical endoscopy and successfully conducted clinical cadaver endonasal navigation tests at UCSF. In addition, collaborating with Dr. Goldschmit at UCSF, I designed neurosurgical elastic retractor hooks with force indicators.
I also have industry experience tackling R&D challenges for the ION robotic bronchoscope, a continuum robot for performing biopsy and therapy in lungs, at Intuitive Surgical. Before that, I was the Robotics Representative for Direct Drive Tech, a robotic startup and creator of the Diablo bipedal wheeled robot. I led both business and engineering development targeting U.S. market, and have exhibited at renowned conferences including ICRA 2022 and CES 2024.
In my free time, I love reading, blogging (Xiaohongshu), playing ultimate frisbee, and cooking. Thank you again for taking the time to look at my work. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns!
Yours,
Chen Dai
